The first viewing aroused personal anger that the struggle for Gay Political rights benefitted superficial, materialistic, ageist and irresponsible Gay entertainment party events. The second and third viewings peeled the layers of the characters resembling people many Gay men would know. Andre Khabbazi as the doomed, terrified to age hustler fascinated me and many. His declaration that "he doesn't like women or ugly men, has only sex for money" erased a support safety net as alienation and drug addiction drives him as a hired killer then a suicidal redemptive savior of a retiring stripper, singer Paul Lekakis. The techno soundtrack is gorgeous. Anger, humor, tears could result from viewing.

Tennessee Williams, the playright, by critics and himself, long admitted that his were "PLAYS IN DRAG", as befitting heroic, suffering, overly theatrical, fashionable women opposite forceful, masculine, sometimes violent men. Mrs. Stone, clearly in an era before the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion, "Gay Themes" were played and suggested through women or hinted vices. Here, a rich faded actress and widow retires to lusty Rome, Italy, becoming embroiled with a Demonic, red headed crusty Contessa and pimping Madame, placing handsome, though impoverished male hustlers around Rome's Spanish Steps for rich clients. Mrs. Stone disillusioned by her verile, handsome "bought" lover abandoning her, submits her lonliness to a worshipping, homeless street man, mimmicking more Gay male anonymous cruisers to an ominous, dangerous fate. Beautiful timecapsule 1961 production design and locales.

Much like the 1980's play to film "EXTREMITIES" with Farah Fawcett (L.A.,CA women catch and torment a rapist to confession), The 24th Day, adapted from theater deals with a male to male version of irresponsible sexual violation, AIDS related suicide, and closet bisexual retribution on a superficial, arrogant Gay male, who after his kidnapped, humourous body waste interrogation, a blood test finds him HIV poz. The terror of joining the club eliminates boyish psycho Scott Speedman from killing his captive. A bold drama about consequences for sexual carelessness by any gender.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: VEREDA TROPICAL
Florrid, campy, stylized, the overexaggerated dramatic upper class homosexual with a coterie of "f-g hags" or surrogate "mother/sister" figures as his closest friends, while falling in love with masculine, heterosexual boys and men that had women or spouses, enough that his physical safety was jeapordized. Manuel Puig's most famous novel and later movie adaption of his work was KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, so Puig's ridiculous emulation mimics of tragic starlets like Rita Hayworth, Vivien Leigh, etc take up scenes. Thoughout this drama in bustling 1980's Rio, Brazil, Manuel Puig is more irritating than interesting. One is watching a woman in a toned, darkly handsome, brooding Latin man replaying the roles of his haunted heroine film stars. In his real biography, Manuel escapes the HIV/AIDS epidemic deadly first decade, but dies of complications from gall bladder surgery in Mexico as the 1990s began. This is hardly a responsible biography of Puig, not even as a tropical, mid life crisis scenario. For lovers of Brazilian men and boys, mixed race and the color caste society it is, there is the fluff factor with muscled eye candy and sporadic sex scenes. Perhaps with same sex marriage and LGBT involved in more quality of life politics globally, there is aspiration that life will be more than a youth obsessed, throwaway of mid-aged single adults kind of counterculture. Puig expresses clearly what thousands of men with masculinist questioning male affair partners have known, that being someone's "little b-tch", despite life and economic accomplishments, is just another form of colonialist patriarchal heterocentrist subjugation.

The good doctor becomes a media celebrity with vigilante minded public, but not before the doctor kidnaps a mother who is a consciencious objector in the news whos daughter was killed by the same pedophile, and tries to force her to sledgehammer the disabled, shit and blood encrusted pedophile to death, she refuses, and is released. The doctor lets the pedophile live, then turns himself over to a police sting operation, to face massive criminal charges and prison himself.

These WWII movies about the Holocaust show the struggle remains constant. Subdued, natural, and powerful the narrative correlating with coming of age pre teen boys like STAND BY ME. Director Louis Malle, known as the husband of actress Candace Bergen, reveals a potent side of his past experiences as a boy in a Catholic boys school, here antagonism between a French gentile and a refugee Jew who bond and become allies as the Nazi occupation under Vichy France dooms both Catholic collaborators and Jewish refugees smuggled in the school, all to die in Nazi death camps. Classic film with Universal themes about humanity overcoming prejudice.

Insights and positive reviews of this adrenaline pump, forceful culture clash film vary with related experience. I'm a first generation American from immigrant parents, as many. Much Prison forced anal sex and sado fetish inmate torture to squeak past the foreign films art house circuit. Christian Blumel high bubble rump and Aaron Hildebrandt's perky little Dumbo ears tenderize their violent racist skinhead phase identity in turns.

Its like seeing a whole new movie, this restored version in the original color. Ive seen badly cut versions of this on TV since the 1960s Creature Features afternoon movie shows, and saw it in the 1990s but on dvd and in black and white. More creepy in color and the matte meteor landscape and monster puppets of the greenhouse lends to the sappy B movie scare fun. But the atmosphere and pace is eerie with dread. A capable version from an H.P. LOVECRAFT story, THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE. The old Arkham family set here in England, practicing Black Magick from the Necromonicon that get their radioactive meteor by chance and the sickness, plus mutations that follow.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: 28 WEEKS LATER
THIS SEQUEL to 28 DAYS LATER (and fated no doubt to make a 3rd installment for a TRILOGY DVD package set), stays honorable to the quick, crisp cinematography, almost CNN news footage feel of much of Director Danny Boyle's films. Here with insightful input by the producers, several months pass on the British isle as the RAGE VIRUS that infects in minutes, turning humans into blood hungry, flesh eating, fast running psychos, is brought unwillingly back by a rural hamlet survivor that makes their way into a now armed and quarantined LONDON by the USA military to bring back survivors and a select repopulation program. The virus spreads among a family and to the new civilian recruits, unleashing a horror CODE RED by the military to kill infected and unfected alike, even with firebombing much of LONDON as a tiny band of survivors outruns infected and soldiers alike. Made in 2007, the river canals of LONDON's business district and new urban complexes turned into a military compound give eerie resemblences to America's 2005 New Orleans KATRINA hurricane disaster, as private BLACKWATER armed units and a media blackout with unofficial bodycount highlighted the future of Post 9/11 psychological operations on crowd control and elimination. The Iraq War's ALLY district GREENZONE is also a hinted feel in this movie as the researched realism of military Marshal Law is considerable.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: A THOUSAND CLOUDS OF PEACE
Perhaps the BLACK AND WHITE cinematographical format was a saving grace for this curious Indie film set in sprawling Post-Industrial Mexico City, legacy of the Mexica Empire, now overpopulated, teeming shanties, and familiar short, clean cut, Indigenous young men seen via immigration across North American cities. An unclear employment/hustler at a pool hall laments his boyfriend ending their relationship. Gerrardo submits his listless life to street encounters, risking disease/violence from a variety of aggressive or exploitative men. The story relates familiar romantics aches with "I'll Call You", "I have to get up early tomorrow". A compassionate seedy diner pregnant waitress about to be fired and a neurotic street lady waiting for her lost man, share in Gerrardo's self-destructive loneliness. A baffling heart attack or ailment, as Gerrardo's hopeless alienation in choking, industrial blasted barrios in a panoramic climax, ends with his collapsing on a bridge. Aware he's nothing to noone and won't be missed. A fantasy montage "afterlife" shows his liberation into a sensual lovemaking with ex-lover to a beautiful Spanish pop song which croons in translation "Look At Me" for forlorn glances. Mexico's virulent Catholic/Patriarchal homophobic culture is one triumph that his unique storyline was made at all.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: PACT WITH THE DEVIL
Bland, early on dated in cinematography and production design story adaption of Oscar Wilde's 19th century novel. The film debut in 2001 and seeing the WTC twin towers among the static postcard shots of NYC was of dark novelty value. For a time period that had great raves and techo music Globally, even the glamourous fashion model scene and discos looked as cheaply designed as a high school dance. The story couldn't tilt any weight as a male fashion model's angst career or as a Satanic horror theme. Malcolm McDowell found himself in the REAL HELL of "pay the rent roles" once his own looks went winter white with powdered tanned leather skin. The average Abercrombie and Finch lanky male lead wasn't arousing or believable for any woman or man to romantically emphasize with. Very TV movie of the week quality. I've never seen this film on dvd or VHS in movie rental stores, but THIS website lands a home for orphan films!

Tight, skillfully written and acted horror thriller with Mexican and American actors. In the tradition of Americans overseas peril films like DAUGHTERS OF SATAN, TURISTA, THE ISLAND, HOSTEL, and African occult thrillers THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, THE BELIEVERS, even CHILDS PLAY. The Afro-Caribbean religions of Santeria and Voudon, with their heavily Catholic/Christian syncretizations have taken media beatings from the more darker, Pre-Christian Aboriginal religions, here in BORDERLAND at least identified as PALO MOYOMBE, a Congo African Bantu people sorcery that includes henious acts of sadistic torture sacrifices to raise powerful spirits and Gods. CHANGO, Warrior Thunder deity got the short thrift here by a psycho drug cult leader and his borderland cult of misfits kidnapping a young American virgin male to raise CHANGOs power for invisibility. Based well on the 1989 MATAMOROS/Brownsville Palo cult of Gay Cuban ethnic drug baron Adolfo Constanzo with his two male lovers involved in the mutilation sacrifice of 21 year old Mark J. Kilroy of Texas on a spring break. White Westerners and Americans are particularly vulnerable overseas with their vices when U.S. Consulates cannot or will not help them out of inconvenient crimes with urban underworlds.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: BREATHLESS
The restored digitally remastered versions of Goddards BREATHLESS are pretty impressive. Ive seen choppy, faded, badly cut versions at double feature art house revival theaters with other French New Wave films, or played on PBS TV movie showcase. The handheld, cinema verite documentary guerrilla feel of BREATHLESS cut into the old school studio system of indie filmmakers paradigms decades before the BLAIR WITCH PROJECT of 1999 fame. The greasy weasel, old school masculinist boor hero Michel made worse as a petty deadly hoodlum makes todays women realize how much the Feminist and Womens Rights movements advanced against the chauvenism and harrassment culture of pre 1970 Eurocentric male privilege. I loved how the American woman slapped Michel every time he grabbed her rear, not tolerating Euro male cultural sex objectification. The scenes are very close to the 1981 remake with Richard Gere set in Los Angeles, CA. The STAR is France and Paris 1959 with stunning social realism timecapsule cinematography of the attire and pace of that energetic period, just before the explosion of POP culture and Sexual Revolution of the 1960s.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: OLD JOY
Seems what I read or between the lines of this almost cinema verite ab lib dialog movie was about the directionless post Baby Boomers, neo failed Yuppies in some urban flight Portland, Oregon neighborhood with prattling, pointless concerns about their tolerated by community lives. Kurt, who appears to be confused and questioning his sex preference with his married male friend bound to a pregnant strong willed wife as his love/sex interest, which somehow what gave it an edge to make it into the Gay/Lesbian film category for further market value. Mark's vanilla spineless liberal AIR AMERICA talk radio worries are of little contrast to drifter intellectual Kurt whos life are communes, college classes, useless physics theories. At film's end, Mark returns to an established coming family life, while Mark, goes to the streets, searching for something, no home or family or love interest, perhaps to cruising for men and flings. Set during the Bush II Presidency, the aimlessness seems more from the Generation X/Grunge rock period of the 1990s with slackers that never grew up.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY II
The playful teen girl spiritist/occult channelings of two sisters, Kristi and Katie years before, now as married women, starts to flesh out the mystery of dual "Demonic" manifestions in upscale American dream San Diego McMansion neighborhoods. In this prequel, a teen daughter of Kristi researches Demonic activity on the internet with her boyfriend and adds to more paranormal disaster by using a ouija board to communicate with an entity going after her toddler brother, the first male born in the mother's heavily matrilineal line of women, allegedly where Kristie made a pact with a Demon for a wealthy life, defaulting, the Demon goes after the boy child's lifeforce, but not before attacking pets, a maid, and through possession of sister Katie, neck snapping murder of "Dan", Kristi's strong, secular stubborn husband, even after failing to banish the Demon with folk magic ritual and cross of their maid. The night vision security cameras and matter of fact objective footage of phenomena, reveal the stages of paranormal attacks on a home and the difference between a dead human ghost haunting and a non-human elemental or Demon with a predator's hunger for lifeforces. With myself, Jay Mal, reviewing the film. I kept getting peripheral side vision black humanoid figure dartings, an inevitability given I live in a house that I grew up in, where the original male owner in the early 1960s blew his brains out with a gun from financial debt problems. The eerie realism of this movie, had me have to banish with incense and a candle negative energy such films produce or activate. Humans are only a few steps away from realizing life doesn't always produce an existence of safety and comfort where paranormal phenomena begins its encroachment.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
I'd compare Modern Millie to a designer dress with a huge stain. Set in 1922 New York City, a small town lady, trained for secretarial work, aims to marry a rich/employer husband, only to end fighting a White Slavery ring operated from her residence hotel by a lecherous "Dragon Lady" Madame and her offensively deformed Asian/Chinese launderers. Perhaps the USA/Vietnam War era gave Hollywood's pass for racially degenerate Chinatown residents in pony tails and pajamas as vice lords for squeaky clean White characters to battle with? In compensation, great 1920's Flapper Era costumes and dances, catchy period songs. I can't remember seeing Modern Millie on TV reruns ever. Asian USA film roles have struggled to improve.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Feel Good/Gay fluff and preposterously obvious at attractive male characters in accidental circumstances. A Los Angeles stockbroker (with strange deformed ears), living a hoax marriage, and homosexually adulterous, attempts suicide in the Southern California mountains, is rescued from a cliff drop by a surfer blond, blue eyed, swimmer build lonely/friendly Gay forest ranger (who looks like Ralph Fiennes) A sexual romance develops that is threatened when the stockbroker's identity, after amnesia, is discovered, sending him back to his arranged marriage wife. A happy ending ensues when the stockbroker divorces and returns to his hero ranger to run the ranger's shuttered family restaurant. The subliminal message? that rural Gay men, untouched by city superficial Gay sex culture, have an innocence and family tolerated conservativism, plus friendly loving openess. Gay Republican Party propaganda perhaps. For Gay viewers, the Gay ranger's forest house had no decorative sensibility, nor Gay porn videos/magazines clearly indicating the Director's/Writer's fetish for a Hetero Masculine, uncomplicated rural "sexual top".
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: THE PRINCESS AND THE BARRIO BOY
Certainly a "past" Mexican-American typecasting family fantasy film breakthrough, in the ABC Afterschool Special tradition. This film had me reflecting the sheer media potential of mainstreaming Mexican-Americans/ Latinos had 9/11 NOT happened, instead fear based nativist portrayals have cursed USA Latino/MidEastern ethnic roles since. In comparison, had AIDS never happened, 1980 "CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC" revealed a cultural pop excitement of the Gay/Lesbian America that COULD have been. Equal parts ROMEO & JULIET/CINDERELLA's wicked stepmother, Edward Olmos, as an example of Pres. Clinton Era, "new Latino money" building contractor, a widower with a cloistered teen daughter and child son is targeted for marriage by a treacherous "Class Pretentious" East Coast Latina golddigger (West Coast VS East Coast Latino rivalries?). His teen daughter rebels her shoved fate by chasing and loving a TEENBEAT idol, youth beauty cast Barrio East L.A. boy at her private school on a scholarship, and working as a swim team youth coach. This coming of age class comedy/drama is charming and merits points for demonstrating the psychological safety net of religion (Christianity Catholicism), intergenerational Latino family loyalty, and "judgement by example" of people from other races/classes. The music soundtrack is top notch, with Spanish pop and USA techno keeping your toes and pulse tapping. In a prophetic irony, artist Michael Costello's "Mermaid Mural" in teen daughter Serena's bedroom, the mermaid, bears a shocking resemblence to actress Eva Longora of the future DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES sitcom!
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: BAY COVE
I'm still getting dehazed mentally from sorting through Tim Mathesons role as a studly orator frat in ANIMAL HOUSE from my teen years in 1978! I couldnt be sure until I saw some key scenes and the constant blackout breaks (for commercials) that this was a TV movie and with veteran character actors of the series TAXI to boot. Woody Harrelson was definately a blond handsome man destined for bigger roles. Pamela Sue Martin was already getting frazzled eye wrinkles and slightly worn since her youthful freshness in THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. Here at Devlin Island, and other films, Satanists always seem to dress and have their houses like conservative Republican Party voters with affluent incomes and hatred of government. Pamela Martin is duped into scheming a property management renovation project by her employer which the Satanists know means outsider zoning and higher taxes! The long living commune of Colonial Era diabolists lose their bid for a 13th member as Pamela Martin saves her husbands soul, which seals a cosmic death warrant for the coven in a fiery church explosion. Satanic family fluff.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: PORNOGRAPHY: A THRILLER
As a snuff film theme thriller, it had elements in the tradition of older films about underground porn sex and hustler for hire and murder operations. Was confusing, with the parallel, bicoastal main characters uncovering a snuff film set up, run by a well connected heavyset, torturer with a strange face mask that sets off signals with a New York writer and a Los Angeles porn star, like a Gay Manchurian Candidate game. Both writer and actor mentally destabilize as they enter the torture/murder film set where a coterie of snuff fans hint in surrealistic terms, a secret society, a fraternity linked by strange rings and calling cards with a Diabolic symbol. Other films of similar theme: HARDCORE, VIDEODROME, HOSTEL.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: HEART OF AMERICA
The screenwriters must have toyed with Eastern Buddhist/Hindu concepts of Karmic debt, literally sowing what you reap in the storyline. Among the "Columbine" spin-off flicks circulating, this ditty puts the audience into borderline retributive sympathy when a boy and girl teen, of a trio of school scapegoats take black market handguns aimed at their bully and teaching staff tormentors on the final day of a high school season. Several teen and adult characters are fleshed out with their pains and foibles demonstrating that NO ONE really IS an innocent victim in karmic terms. Haven't felt this much titillation at school bullies punished since the 1970's horror hit "CARRIE"! Since Columbine, schools Worldwide have been cursed to realize violent cliques, gangs, and even scholastic achieving bullies are dangerous to the mental health infrastructure of institutions.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: FRISK
Hasn't lost any of its nihilistic emptiness as viewers follow the self absorbed, often selfish searchers for sexual emotional love or recognition and the three collaborative S.F. serial sex torture killers. This movie made few comfortable in its film festival and Gay film conference viewings, considering the AIDS epidemic was killing men consistently and California had a right wing Gov. Pete Wilson agitating homophobia and race divisions. The Gay community was struggling for positive media portrayals. FRISK and Dennis Cooper has had a tenuous relationship with the Gay and AIDS establishment as his novels and stories are about killing Gays by Gays for recreation or from boredom. Youtube.com took off FRISK from all its clips, like other vid servers. Gay horror films are good for younger gay men and boys to realize the crime and murder the sex circuit is affected by.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: TERRIBLY HAPPY
Judging from the film poster with a gun drawn action figure, I thought this would be a shootem' up Danish cop battling Scandinavian drug lords in farming regions storyline. WRONG. As a lover of brainy, cerebral chewy foreign films, this Danish flick unnerved and fascinated me, joining others in praised member reviews. It stands in the tradition of films like FARGO, THE WICKER MAN, even HIGH NOON, of small town Police officials dealing with sinister elements of compact populations. The ancient Celtic/Scandinavian lore/history of human sacrificial offerings/criminals executed and drowned in the regions vast peat bogs is also suggested here, as the local yokels disappear problem new residents with regularity. The Town Fathers, in this case the local General Store Keeper, Town Doctor, Protestant Minister, need a fourth power broker for their nefarious card games with the town female Hairstylist, also the town paid escort service, here Robert the handsome, but haunted city cop is chillingly led to his fate with extortion over his homicidal trysts with a problem married couple and their daughter. Instead of a rousing gun shootout at a local bar, Marshal Robert has a brutal beer and whisky drink off with the town psycho/spousal abuser Jorgen that could be right out of a Southwest USA Western. An offbeat thriller that is really based on small towns and hamlets where town officials and police engage in and cover up crimes outside larger government juristictions. Another jewel film to savor for a thriller flick fix.

Another role breakthrough is the closeted, Gay rookie detective played by a Latinoesque/Filipino looking actor called "Ramon". A racial ethnic who is not stuck in submissive "bottom" exotic roles for their White male admirations of past Gay films. A stolen truck, drifting Ex-Prison con, once male prostitute, travels America kidnapping, torturing, raping, and killing male hitchhikers and hustlers. Malcolm Moorman as "Jack" is a lanky, deep voiced sexual mix of bearded Kenny Loggins/Jeffrey Dahmer combined. Cop Ramon, after a duped sex tryst with Jack, must hunt the killer before his reputation and more victims ensue. The bar pick-up/sex scene with outed George Michael's dance track riveting the action might have Gay viewers hitting the backtrack DVD button repeatedly! Excellent techno/alternative late 1990's music groups soundtrack in Dolby sound, literally a QUALITY deserving bigger budget studio thrillers. Jack's psycho need for redemption and love from Ramon never succeeds, has Ramon choosing justice even for expendable prostitutes against Jack's streetcrime cleansing agenda.

Had MTV films put out the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Afterschool Special, it would look like SAVAGE COUNTY. By the first 10 years of the 21st Century, it's not altogether the fault of writers, filmmakers, editors, producers, that fresh storylines and visuals are possible any more as themes have been exhausted in horror and other genres, that films become rehashes of rehashes, even music soundtracks with hip "up and coming" acts are sounding like up and coming from the 1990s. Much of the cast look like college students casted from Hollywood and New York fashion agencies and speak with more articulation that most present American teens. I could almost see a Tea Party Republican recruitment poster on the property of the inbred Texas family house. The clique of hipster, low twang voiced teens are tortured, killed, some stewed in "the soup" huge vat of acid in the proverbial torture barn. The most telling message bears some truth, of rural ranches and towns, their law enforcement often in collaboration with town psychos or criminals to elminate people in their own sick style of justice.

THERE IS NO MEANING says an imprisoned, special privileges Jewish doctor preparing lab corpses for the famous Dr. Josef Mengele, as a camp director interviews his work objectives. Only the Atheist/Secular Materialist logic of existentialist, post WWII writer Jean Paul Sartre or the Mahayanist Buddhist concepts of intergenerational cursed karma can explain such a remarkable line and story of Nazi industrial murder of the 3rd Reich's FINAL SOLUTION. Comparative historians/revisionists might also find more argument that the 1945 allied liberation found destroyed gas chambers/crematoria due to the camp insurrections of THIS drama. As a cold news video/documentary colored, music soundtrackless narrative, based on actual eyewitness accounts, the daily gassing, corpse retrieval, cremation, and fertilizer ash processing at Auschwitz 1944 by the Jewish selected Sonderkommando squads to brutalize and dupe Jews/political prisoners from occupied Europe is detailed, displaying priviledges for their fated 4 months of tenure. A girl child surviving the gassing, gives the 12th Squad redemptive hope and furthers their tragic rebellion as the allies seem so close. This viewer remembers the reviews and screening accounts in Israels press and the short USA threatrical bookings with Jewish and mainstream viewers leaving from sheer psychological horror at history and civilized Europe's legalized genocide. Post 1945 Auschwitz and ongoing Global groups exterminations by wars and regimes provides a tragic postscript to this nightmarish allegory on Spaceship Earth.

Thanks to the Special Features link with the Director's Commentary narrative, the baffling, borderline wilderness Lisbon, Portugal with absurd, sexually violent characters were put in context. Equal parts livid Gay masculine archetypes imagery, the alienated, reptilian charm Trash Collector Sergio whose Kouros tight body, used and discarded by many anonymous Lisbon men, the predatory narrative said more about homosexual urban angst, especially in religious, family oppressive countries, than many big budget, bawdy "Gay Themes" as in America. A bound and gagged skinhead policeman that reappears like a sadistic sexual saint to Sergio as his black latex bodysuit alterego are vignettes that make this film irresistable to NOT forget. For post AIDS education critics, this film will disturb, as bareback action, sans condoms with closeted bisexual, ruggedly commonplace Portuguese men mirror the rustic, waterstained, weary Lisbon no travel brochure would dare display. O FANTASMA is raw homosexual living without politics, philosophy, or destiny.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: THE ECLIPSE
Oh the cruel honesties of being a member film reviewer. Normally I eat dinner while watching picks on my laptop, with some coffee to stay perked, even with caffeine I couldnt keep from dozing off and being shaken awake when the elder rotted and black eyed ghost relative of the widower keeps appearing with shriek musical score, then back to a long drawn out storyline, based on stories by an Irish playwright. The producers and director, didnt know, from their disjointed plot where to take the viewer or what kind of movie this was. Some directors can mix subplots well, the pace here would have worked for a low key drama of burnt out pro writers at a literary festival in lovely seaside Ireland, Wexford. The ghost subplot could have been dumped. I went back to the scenes I dozed to, mainly to see, like a travelogue feature the lovely regional locales and tourist spots. Perhaps Brazilian double expresso java will keep me perked next time. This film reminds me of the film SHOOT THE MOON with Albert Finny and Diane Keaton, also about burnt out writers caught in an overdramatic love triangle. Zzzzzzzzzz.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: LA MISSION
Leave it to San Francisco, CA to have a mass fusion of cultures. spiritual beliefs and racial groups interact into cultural hybrids. The Mission District of S.F. in the process of slow gentrification, racial shifts from a predominantly American Mexican district. Benjamin Bratt and the man playing his brother, have both played Gay or Gayesque actor roles in their past. Here, BB is well developed along with Goatee and post prison tattoos on his hard muscled brown skinned body as the ex con, regional bus driver with rough crowd passengers testing his aggression and control of alcoholism at all turns. The segments with his high school Gay sagger pants son with an affluent White male lover and their trysts to a Gay disco, seem like different movie segments or Worlds. A Black female love interest adds to more outsiders in the life of BB. There is slow antagonistic reconciliation in the plot where a relapsed BB, his son now in UCLA, beyond the Barrios reach, hits home, when the son's attempted homophobic killer, a gang member that is himself killed, in a Mexica Aboriginal memorial ceremony where violence and substance abuse keeps claiming lives. BBs final journey is to Los Angeles to restart a new re association with his strong willed, openly Gay son.

Mindbender of a psychological quiet thriller. For many American men, their take might be more absurd, those creepy "shop classes middle aged male teachers" in Middle School, what they did when they disappeared into the rest room or the teacher's pet boys over the ignored non talented boys. Without music soundtrack and handheld camera angles, the propagonist divorced carpentry teacher sneaking around and bolting before being discovered by other teachers. His passive aggressive, aloof face behind glasses, his explosive retorts among his ex wife or problem people. The developing plot makes you think he is a closet pedophile or borderline serial killer honing in on vulnerable boys. But a post juvenile facility teenager, himself a killer, the killer of the teacher's own son years before in a car radio theft, turns the plot into a borderline revenge climax and into one of redemption acceptance. No happy ending, simply the apathetic boy on meds returning to his apprenticeship and hopes of the teacher becoming his legal guardian. My own biological father was a tradesmen and had me and my twin brother on construction jobs, so the nervous, details obsessed watching and monitoring, I could identify with well. An equally thorough look at carpentry trade school galore.

The choice to bestow my LORDLY 5 stars comes less from Acting/Theme breakthroughs than for a realistic, urban anthropological look at sexually needy men in a porn theater. Talk about group dynamics. Set in a "Straight" smut house, jaded Gay men hunting real men, Straight men hunting the orifices of cruising transvestite hookers, play out their needs, even with AIDS/VD fears realized. Maybe it's a European thing, but seeing the men flicking cigarette lighters to find their seats was unexpected and funny compared to USA stumbling/grumbling patrons in darkness. The one woman, a jaded/aged ex-dancer now cashier, flirts with her loving older bisexual male cruiser and a young, chubby sexy projectionist over workplace liquor. I've been to Straight/Gay porn houses before Video/DVD arrived, and yes, lights in the theater (as portrayed), is horrifying as the dark provides anonymous protection to one's secret revels.

A 1990's trend/craze seized Hollywood and Indie films with Transvestite infused dramas/comedies (The Crying Game, To Wong Fu, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Romeo & Juliet, Etc). Canada wasn't about to be abandoned, hence this pastiche from theater with men in female roles crossdressing with straight/Gay characters. Truly multi-layered but the jist: Gay male Quebec prisoners exchange sex favors to guards which allow for the jail chapel to be converted into a post modernist theater. Kidnapping a visiting elderly Catholic Bishop, a vengeful inmate forces him to see in reenactments the murder of his teen lover in a fire, that the Bishop in youth blamed on "Simon". Reality fuses with the set pieces. Turn of the Century Canada is stylized in a luxury lakeside resort where a preposterous Parisian noblewoman, played by a Black Transvestite stretches one's patience at the multi-racial casting. Simon's beautiful male lover submits to matricide of his lunatic jaded noblewoman mother. Nice period costuming and production design. Tedious, but some choice moments.

It was a late night TV rerun of "TWO HANDS" that had me wanting to see the full DVD version. I'm a sucker for period Generation X/Alternative Rock soundtrack 90's picks (I was in my thirties then). This morbid charming thriller: a tormented, philosophical older brother ghost attempts to telepathically guide his younger, innocent, though jobs skill-less brother (Heath Ledger) from a duped decision to work for the same Sydney mobsters that killed and buried him. A subplot with "karmic consequences" involves two thieving street kids, that stealing Heath/Jimmy's mob money at the beach, one kid is run over, with his girl cohort taking assassin revenge. Heath's older sister is hilarious as a bank robber trying to teach Jimmy morality lessons. Loved the crisp, colorful cinematography and oddball locales of Sydney's side districts. Have seen the film 6 times. My pick for a cloudy/rainy day quirky feel good film.

Y2K never happened, but 9/11 did, thus religious and fringe Right Wingers accelerated the "Illuminati/One World Order" scare in various political governments and Christian television. Fans of "Art Bell/Coast To Coast Talk Radio" will find familiar territory here. A Neo Knights Templar/Masonic terrorist order goes on a historical killing rampage Worldwide against Esoteric protectors guarding "The Loculus", a Gnostic Christian box relic containing 4 nails from Jesus Christ's crucifixion (and DNA/blood/tissue), that the Order wants to clone a manufactured Anti-Christ humanoid that villains will pass as a savior at Vatican City. Paced for European attention spans, though rich with occult lore and historic costumed reenactments. Actor James D'Arcy, in many films, young, tight bodied, and competent suffers from mechanical, alienated sex scenes, that even exotic Mediterranean locales can't save.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: THE BUBBLE
Truly a classic, in the vein of closeted Gay men as in THE CONFORMIST or other films where Gays straddle repressive political regimes and sexual love. The Apartheid state of present Israel is amusingly and hideously portrayed here by an Israeli director for the World. The recreational, anti Arab racism by White Jews reveals itself socially by a people themselves once the hated of other nations or WWII era Europe. This cosmopolitan, yet Arab oppressed Israel, a model of a racial police state the present USA Republican Party would create under the immigration hysteria movement. The post sex talk between the Israeli soldier protagonist and his Arab lover resembles scores of pillow talk moments in America between Non Whites and later disclosed Gay Republicans spewing propaganda talking points. A real Homeo and Julian doomed love affair where no side wins and vengeance schemes until some doomsday that never arrives.

Falls into past edgy "post or near death experience" movies like JACOB'S LADDER, THE MACHINIST, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. A psychologically tormented Cancer surgeon and researcher is confronted with the "lost soul" of a pancreatic stomach cancer patient named Santos, who is cast as a sleazy pimp/street criminal/trickster who offers the Doctor any vice or wish he wants in gratitude while at a terminal cancer medical convention in some decayed, post economic collpased Spanish city replete with armies of homeless and mass Muslim ghettos in open Mecca prayers. As surreal as any Catalonian painting of native son Salvador Dali. Only when the medical chart of Santos is finally signed by the neglectful doctor can the lost soul/Demon of Santos finally disappear back to Hades (suggested in his fiery car crash with truck). Like the ironic symbols of a Spanish Cab driver who has the Virgin Mary and child icon statue in the front dashboard and a tacky hula dancer doll in the back dash, by contrast, Lost Soul/Demon Santos has a royal king's crown artifact on his dashboard suggesting "King of the World" powers. The Tibetan Book Of the Dead and afterlife pleasure and gory hellzone experiences might explain some of the Doctor's netherworld fantasies as his karma is confronted by Santo's league of minions. Juicy cerebral horror flick, chewy to the end!
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: MULLIGANS
The unintentional Gay stranger or homewrecker with the original best of intentions upon a heterosexual model family storyline or Heterocrisis in Affluent vacation suburbs premise. Attractive leading role figures. A hetero handsome mid age father with a college aged son who brings his cosmetic sultry eyed and muscled pal for summer vacation at an American lakeside hamlet where the humpy college friend and closeted Gay family father have a sexual fling that is disclosed in surprise encounters. I found myself more surprised at the lone Black male and Asian female in this hamlet as socially accepted in the mainly White economically segregated hamlet than the Gay romance. Controlled acting that was tolerably believable. No happy ending, just resolves and Gay Chase, the college stud was a talented art painter in his role.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: EAST SIDE STORY
In the climate of the USA and immigration reform hysteria, this Bush II period ethnic comedy navigates a difficult disjointed script and vignettes. Decades earlier, the English MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE also tackled a cross section of similar issues between Whites and Non Whites. sexual identity and class. Here a similar state of White Gay racialist class gentrification and older ethnic Latino neighborhoods dealing with the economic fallout and upgrades where race and sexuality come to a head. A variety of Gay male types appear, yet the Italianesque looking Latino lead and a White unfaithful lover push the story in to Gay soap opera cliches. A happy ending while attempting a message about tolerance problems among already discriminated Latinos and Gay White males agitated against each other. THE DOWN LOW, also attempted this Gay Latino identity issue with tenous skill.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: SCANNERS
Barely out of high school in 1980 and scores of college students and Saturday partiers at a local So. Cal Mall Theater, after toking a toke, some beers, few people ever made it past mid movie before dozing off. I never had a clear image of SCANNERS until this theatrical cut. I forgot how LONG horror movies were before 2000, or pre-Internet attention spans. This Canadian horror film in the USA hyped up the few gore scenes and telepathic mind battles, but the sci fi, corporate espionage/scanner armies breeding agenda was lost on many viewers. After CARRIE, Hollywood spun off psychokinetic and telepathic terror films, also like THE FURY. Canada's sparsely populated cities, antiseptic modern industrial parks and skylines were always a trademark of intellectual, called cold David Cronenberg modern terror films. Actor Stephen Lack as the main misfit scanner always had those huge clear eyes and full lips with alienated features and gestures that made him a strange looker/leading man, even though no sexual romance happens. The artwork of the deranged Artist scanner were also lucid monstrous creations that viewers remembered. The period CRT hideous computers with green font on black backgrounds are a timecapsule for todays techies of where high tech has evolved.

Makes the argument to LEGALIZE ALL DRUGS more problematic, in the Libertarian debate to end THE WAR ON DRUGS that many Western developed nations keep going to bust organized crime for cash confiscations and to fill prisons for profit. The limited variety of men in this documentary billed as being about Gay men is misleading. The interviewees were Gay White Men and examining their pasts and attitudes, selfish, egotistical, career advantaged males into higher economic class systems. The blame politically is usually dumped on Black and Latino, and foreign males in North America, rather than the domestic drug labs run by citizens. The larger Gay community is character assassinated by the chem slamming and bareback epidemic of the last 15 years. The argument that Same Sex marriage will stabilize single Gay men from self destructive behavior is hypothetical. Some heartfelt points, but elusive on what direction the Gay Community should take as the Gay media is lockstep with the drug, alcohol, sex industries selling them glamour muscle youth illusions. Only Population Control advocates will cheer the drug addict fates as will far right conservatives.

Crank down your snide reviews, suspend disbelief, and MARVEL at being a child again. This sidesplitting allegorical comedy on greed is a charmer film for all age groups. SOOOOO CUTE Little 7 year old Alex Etel steals the movie as a virtuous, over honest tyke obsessed and memorizing dates and bios of Christian Saints that he talks to as a satchel of stolen Pounds Sterling bills literally crashes on his rural field cardboard castle. His scam artist, greed demon 9 year old brother wants to buy things and indenture kids while "Damien" wants to end World poverty. All the Christian ethics adults attempt to drill in kids goes haywire as Damien's father loses faith, regains greed after their Christmas season home burglery, enough to attempt his family exchanging Pounds everywhere as a fictitious time clock looms for the Euro conversion in Britain (never happened). The boy brothers questioning Christian Bible stories with logic will blush any adult's face at really believing indoctrination as adult life forces religionists to adjust and unfortunately, LIE. Crisp digital camera cinematography and pulsing techno rock sountrack score that will keep even older teens watching. Too CUTE it's obscene!

This could be why I'm not so hip on having a big circle of friends anymore, their dangerous and often self destructive ways that can overlap and even end ones life. This Neo BLAIR WITCH PROJECTesque reality storyline mockumentary by bored Ohio teens creating prankster mayhem on a maligned community and passing truckers, hippies, backpackers, meet their brutal slaughter end by hammering, slit throating, axing, bodies gutted for pig meat for farm penned swine, by an extreme conservative religious township cult. The worst teen culprit is the oversexed, foul mouthed, impulsive, vandelizing Derek Boggs Boggman with his heavy set imbicle sister dragging along, a blond girlfriend, a nerdy camera boy, and the handsome van driver. Their Gen X antagonism on civilians draws some sympathy for the rural compound killers as later doing a public service. This could almost be USA Red State Teabaggers propaganda to clean up America by the subliminal connotations. North America is filled with isolated hamlets where strangers disappear to fantastic ends as news exposes reveal every few years. Shirley Jacksons short film adaption of THE LOTTERY comes to mind with the religious backwoods killers holding June 9 as a seasonal special day. That spray painted van, sign or trashed mailbox may just get some karmic payback on social bullies from the least suspected. Derek deserved every bit of discipline, even baiting viewers to praising good riddance to his social type.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: TO PLAY OR TO DIE
The theme is ageless and very contemporary in the USA. Whether confused Gay and Lesbian/Transgendered related youth suicides or those of Straight teens. The Darkly Brunette quasi predatory boys school scapegoat Kees, in lust/hero worship love with the Alpha Male class bully Charel, sets off a tryst at his family home while parents away at a wedding, to attempt a seduction in role play. Charel dares and offers point blank a chance to do it without labels or psyche baggage to which Kees no longer knows where to take the seduction. Athletic tests and a fist fight ensues, Charel storms off. Bruised Kees arouses himself to orgasm, not thinking that neighborhood kids outside are peering in living room windows, which sets off a laugh fest and outed shame. His trapeze artist high wire fantasy succumbs to Kees falling or throwing himself down a high staircase to his young death. Like Gay teens Globally, psychological survival escapes one too many as headline news show. Theatrical rich tragedy.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: CIRCLE OF EIGHT
Like THE MACHINIST, FLATLINERS, JACOBS LADDER, the storyline here takes on the life review and karmic action consequences repetition in an astral realm filled with bizarre entities and tricksters that rely on ever gruesome tactics to teach spiritual lessons, in the case of character Jessica, haunted by her younger brothers drowning death, a surrogate victim, a fellow loft neighbor handsome artist, becomes Jessicas test of self sacrifice, saving him from underneath furniture on a New Years Eve fire. Aburdities abound in THE DANTE building, with a gatekeeper or Death type figure as a disheveled aged car thief with his office in an elevator. The tenants are all nefarious personalities pulling stunts and tricks to further make Jessica awaken to her post death consciousness and guilt. Only in finally burning alive to die with Evan the artist is her guilt/bad karma finally forgiven and she burns/pulverizes into Nirvana.
FILM GAYVIEWETTE: THE GROCER'S SON
Let's get hokey, a sweet, intimate intergenerational issues film, something the French can do well when they focus and keep the domestic emotional ranting in check. The little things that are Universal play in here, anyone that has grown up with an intergenerational family business, particularly a small specialized one, as the Grocery/General Store of this rugged French mountain village where an estranged 20 something son returns from an urban service waiter's job as his father suffers a stroke and must deal with ongoing tensions by his older dysfunctional, antidepressant taking brother and frustrated, but buxom Cougaresque brunette mother. Eccentric elderly rural neighbors and the thousand little things that kill for anyone in a service sector job. An arts major girlfriend visiting her young beau does her best to navigate if this family is worth future dealings. Actor Nicholas Cazale, whose rustic, sneering narrow olive eyes, unshaven boxer like features could be a French double of noir hero John Garfield, urban rough, but unintentionally vulnerable and ridiculous among demanding aged mountain locales straining his vendors van for small deliveries or paying in home grown trade for purchases. A charming date flick with an actual happy ending for once among the Gallics.
